- 1 month

- In person

Overview
RoboticGen Academy is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our academy as STEM Education Volunteers through an AIESEC iGV partnership with AIESEC Colombo South (Moratuwa).
You will work alongside our mentors at the RoboticGen Academy Makerspace in Dehiwala, Sri Lanka, helping children and teenagers explore robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, and hands-on STEM projects.
You’ll help students build confidence through practical learning while developing your own teaching and communication skills.
Commitment and availability
This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity.
All times are Sri Lanka time.
What you will do
- Assist experienced mentors during practical sessions, helping students understand concepts, troubleshoot their work, and complete projects.
- Encourage students to ask questions, experiment, and develop problem-solving and independent learning skills.
- Create and test STEM projects and challenges, with working examples, student instructions, and mentor notes. These can be inspired by your culture and experiences.
- Plan and host school sessions, live STEM challenges, or workshops with the academy team, including preparation, facilitation, practical activities, and feedback.
- Complete a small, supervised research project in robotics, AI, or STEM education, and present the findings.
- Share your culture and experiences through age-appropriate activities that encourage students to learn about different perspectives.
- Keep brief records of assigned activities, student learning observations, and suggestions for the mentor team.
- Help set up and tidy learning spaces, and guide students in caring for tools and equipment.
Requirements
- Be a university student or recent graduate interested in STEM education and volunteering, subject to AIESEC's participant eligibility and selection process.
- Communicate clearly in English and be willing to explain ideas in simple, encouraging ways.
- Enjoy working with children and teenagers, with patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
- Show curiosity about robotics, coding, AI, or hands-on science and technology.
- Be reliable, willing to learn, and comfortable working with people from different backgrounds.
- Follow academy guidance on student wellbeing, privacy, and safe use of equipment.
Volunteers with backgrounds in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, Education, Science, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Prior teaching experience is helpful but is not essential. Sinhala is not required for this visiting volunteer role; volunteers will work with the local mentor team.
Nice to have
- Experience in tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, or STEM outreach.
- Basic coding, electronics, robotics, CAD, or practical project-building skills.
- Participation in robotics competitions, hackathons, university clubs, or community projects.
- Experience preparing learning materials or organising educational activities.
- Leadership, teamwork, or intercultural experience.
Four-week volunteer plan
An academy mentor will guide you throughout the placement. You’ll start by observing and assisting, then lead suitable activities with support.
By the end of the four weeks, you will:
- Create two small STEM projects with instructions and working examples.
- Help mentor children during regular academy sessions.
- Work with the volunteer team to host one school session, live challenge, or workshop.
- Complete a small research project and present your findings.
Projects will suit your skills and the students you work with. Cultural ideas are welcome—for example, a coding game based on a traditional game, an interactive story about a festival, or a building challenge inspired by a landmark from your country.
You’ll have a short weekly check-in with your mentor to discuss progress and feedback. All activities take place within the schedule above.
