Mentor Level 1

  • 3 months
  • Part Time
  • Hybrid

Overview

RoboticGen Academy is looking for a Mentor L1 to help students aged 8–18 learn robotics and artificial intelligence. This part-time role combines virtual and in-person mentoring assistance with learning and research.

Picture a student whose first robot does not move, then the moment they discover why. As an L1 Mentor, you help an experienced mentor turn moments like that into confidence for the student while building your own skills.

Commitment and availability

Weekly commitment is 10–20 hours in total, generally split between mentoring and research. Availability is needed for assigned sessions within these operating hours:

  • Virtual mentoring assistance: Monday to Friday, 7 PM–10 PM. Availability is needed only for assigned slots.
  • Physical mentoring assistance: Saturdays, 9 AM–6 PM, at the RoboticGen Academy Makerspace in Dehiwala. Weekday availability from 12 PM–6 PM is optional.
  • Meetings: Be available for meetings announced in advance, such as the weekly mentors' standup.

What you will do

  • Assist mentors during virtual and physical sessions, helping students understand concepts and complete projects.
  • Encourage students to explore beyond the curriculum and develop independent learning skills.
  • Prepare mock answer scripts, give feedback on existing content, and suggest new content.
  • Learn through academy materials, educational activities, competitions, and research projects, including a self-initiated research project.
  • Take on other reasonable tasks that support students' learning.

Requirements

  • Be a post-A/L student selected for university entrance in the science stream, or a first- or second-year undergraduate pursuing an Engineering or IT degree. Electronics and Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechatronics are preferred fields.
  • Communicate effectively in English and Sinhala, and be able to engage and teach children and teenagers.
  • Show interest in learning robotics and AI, and enthusiasm for STEM education.

Nice to have

  • Experience creating STEM learning materials, volunteering, or STEM outreach.
  • Participation in hackathons, competitive programming, robotics competitions, or relevant school or university clubs.
  • Skills in PCB design, CAD, embedded programming, or coding.
  • Leadership experience at school or university.

Training and progression

This is a voluntary training program lasting a maximum of three months. Progress is evaluated against these milestones:

  • 40 or more audited one-hour mentoring sessions.
  • 25 or more audited one-hour live sessions.
  • Completion of a self-initiated research project.
  • Completion of assigned programs, projects, and duties.

Passing the evaluation may lead to promotion to Mentor L2, which has a per-contribution stipend.

Learning opportunities and benefits

  • Access to academy projects, programs, and guidance from experienced mentors and instructors.
  • Free access to more than 100 premium robotics and AI courses and projects, stated value LKR 60,000+.
  • On successful completion, an OboPlay Starter Kit, stated value LKR 13,800.
  • Opportunities to join robotics and AI research projects, competitions, and the RoboticGen Robotics Team.
  • Opportunities to grow with the RoboticGen robotics and AI community.

Work culture

We aim for a balanced, milestone-focused working environment. Team members can contribute ideas and lead regardless of title, and we choose ideas on their merits.
